Lumiere Foundation’s Humanities and Social Sciences Program

As of 2020, fewer than 10% of students in the humanities and social sciences come from low-income backgrounds. Less than 22% are people of colour. The Lumiere Foundation’s Humanities and Social Sciences Program aims to change that.

Research in the humanities and social sciences helps students think more deeply about the world and their place in it, build critical thinking and writing skills, and learn to analyse and present evidence. These are skills that are crucial for college readiness and the workplace.

In the Lumiere Humanities and Social Sciences Program, students can do research in fields like sociology, history, languages, philosophy, education or public policy. What is the role of propaganda in shaping public opinion? What are the effects of social media use in early adolescence? What caused the rising popularity of dystopian worlds in young adult fiction?

We also encourage students interested in STEM to explore the unique perspectives that social sciences can bring to the field. How are racial biases encoded in machine learning datasets and AI algorithms? How are government policies impacting the development of carbon capture technologies? What can we learn from global public health responses to the COVID-19 pandemic?

The program has a Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter Session.

Admissions are currently open for the Winter 2024 session.
